“It’s on the website.”
That sentence probably explains more HOA frustration than we realize. The meeting minutes are there. The budget is there. The governing documents are there.
So technically, the information is available. But...
➡️ Can a homeowner easily find it?
➡️ Do they know which document contains the answer?
➡️ Do they even understand the language?
➡️ Do they know whether the document they found is current?
➡️ Do they understand why the board made the decision in the first place?
Access to information and understanding aren’t the same thing. Transparency isn't simply uploading more PDFs. Rather, it’s shortening the distance between a question and the context someone needs to understand the answer.
That may mean better organization. Clearer explanations. Search. Timely updates. A way to ask a plain-language question without knowing the exact name of the document that contains the answer.
Boards shouldn’t have to repeatedly explain information that already exists. Homeowners shouldn’t need to become governing-document experts to understand their community.
The information may already be there. The harder question is whether people can actually use it.
That gap between access and understanding is one of the things we’re trying to close at InsideHOA — not just by making documents easier to access, but by helping homeowners ask plain-language questions and get answers grounded in their community’s own governing information.
Better access matters, but understanding is what makes the information useful...and actionable.
